Mining

The Fitzroy Region hosts 44 of Queensland’s 59 active coal mines, and approximately 47% of Queensland’s proposed and operating gas mines*.

The region has long been mined for gold and precious stones, and is now a significant producer and exporter of coal and natural gas. In the QLUMP Land use summary 1999-2009 for the Fitzroy NRM Region, mining accounted for 102,389ha or 0.65% of total land use in the region in 2009.
