Broadsound Coast [Natural Resources] Condition Assessment

The Broadsound Coast extends from the Clairview Creek catchment in the north, south to the headwaters of Herbert Creek (but excluding the Shoalwater Bay Military Training Area), west from the coast to the Connors Range, Broadsound Range, and Marlborough Hills to about the locality of Glen Geddes, and east to include the Broadsound coast, Torilla Plain and islands associated with Broad Sound and Broad Sound Channel to the three nautical mile limit.

This project aims to fill knowledge gaps to enable investments at a sub-regional scale in the following thematic areas:

  • Sustainable land management and use
  • Terrestrial Biodiversity
  • Inland aquatic ecosystems
  • Estuaries and marine aquatic integrity (only those relating to intertidal wetlands)
  • Water quality

The project is expected to produce a report and maps that provide:

  • an assessment of each of the Broadsound coastal sub catchments in accordance with each of the above themes,
  • delineation of key assets within each sub catchment,
  • recommendations for management of these key assets,
  • discussion of potential investments linked to the maintenance of sustainable production and resource utilization systems along the coast,
  • a condition assessment of some key coastal environmental assets,
  • a summary of the waterbird conservation values (including for migratory species) of the area,
  • delineation (in GIS format) of important areas for waterbird conservation in the study area,
  • an assessment of each important area against the (Ramsar and Shorebird Site Network) criteria for international importance,
  • information on condition and threats of each important area,
  • recommendations on action for management of those wetland areas

The project is a collaboration between the Fitzroy Basin Association, Central Queensland University’s Centre for Environmental Management, Wetlands International – Oceania and the Queensland Environmental Protection Agency.
