Assessment of habitat critical to the survival of the Crimson Finch (eastern form) in CQ

The Crimson Finch is listed as Vulnerable under the Queensland Governments Nature Conservation Act (1994) (QEPA 2006). Improving our understanding of the species conservation needs and status of this bird is a high priority for the Fitzroy Basin Association.  Wayne Houston and Robert Black of Central Queensland University are conducting a project with the following broad objectives:

  • Reviewing known information about the ecology of the Crimson Finch;

  • Mapping braided channels in the Isaacs and Connors Catchments;

  • Assessing Crimson Finch distribution, abundance and seasonal use of selected sites;

  • Investigating use by Crimsons Finches of sites with contrasting grazing pressures

  • Describing habitat requirements

  • Raising community awareness of the plight of the Crimson Finch and enhance likelihood of locating further sites of Crimson Finch occurrence (+ other threatened or near threatened finches e.g. Star Finch)

  • Determining if the subspecies is present in other suitable habitat.
