An introduction...
Welcome to the website for the Fitzroy Basin Association's
(FBA's) Coastal & Marine programme.
Here you will find information on the many
successful activities the coastal programme has
supported over the last few years. FBA's area includes a large
part of Queenslands coastline.
There are more than 30 estuaries, 19 neighbourhood catchments, many
Islands and reefs, and a vast diversity of aquatic and terrestrial
ecosystems. This area also includes a
Ramsar
listed site for migratory birds, national parks and includes the
southern area of the world heritage listed Great Barrier Reef.

Local Coastal & Marine Assets...
Some of the important species that are located in our area include
the Indo-pacific Humpback and Snub-fin dolphins.
Seagrass beds provide an important habitat and food source for Dugong
and Green Turtles. Other local turtle species
include Leatherback, Hawksbill, Loggerhead and Flatback
turtles. The rare
Yellow
Chat (bird) utilises coastal wetlands and sedgelands as a food
source and breeding habitat. The Beach Stone Curlew is
sighted along our sandy beaches which are frequented by migratory
shorebirds.

The direction...
The Coastal & Marine program continues to target pressures on
envirnmental, social, cultural and economic assets within FBA's
region. Through the Coastal & Marine program, the FBA has
been:
Assessing condition of the assets through partnerships with
research, consultancy and whole of government organisations;
Initiating planning for implementation of appropreate management of
the regions coastal assets; and
Supporting capacity building within communities to manage and
conserve our coastal assets.
The recently completed coastal ammendments to the regional plan (
Central Queensland
Strategy for Sustainability - CQSS2) provide enhanced clarity on required management actions. The
program will rely heavily on community participation, particularly
in on-ground activities to achieve its aims.
The strategic direction of the Coastal & Marine program is
coordinated by FBA while funding is also devolved to the coastal
sub regional bodies - Fitzroy River and Coastal Catchments (FRCC)
and Boyne Calliope Sub Region (BCSR).
The success so far...
Although the Coastal & Marine program is relatively new to the
FBA it has rapidly gained momentum.
