Community Engagement in Turtle Conservation

Central Queensland’s community members are being asked to lend a hand in efforts to protect an endangered species of turtle.

adult head close up3 The Fitzroy River Turtle ( Rheodytes leukops ) is classified as ‘vulnerable’ and is facing a possible decline in population due to nest predation and habitat disturbance. This turtle was discovered in 1980 and is believed to inhabit only the streams and rivers of the Fitzroy Basin in Central Queensland.

Greening Australia Queensland ,  Fitzroy Basin Association and Central Queensland University with assistance from the Environmental Protection Agency are joining forces in an effort to raise awareness and promote the plight of this endangered species. A range of educational strategies have already been initiated with several more to commence in the coming months.

For further information on this species, visit http://www.epa.qld.gov.au/link/?id=1961

If you would like to find out more about this project or how you can get involved please contact either, Greening Australia Queensland on (07) 4923 7543 or email lhale@qld.greeningaustralia.org.au

Volunteers are especially welcome!  You can help protect the nesting sites as these volunteers are.  A small panel of mesh placed over the nest discourages predator's from digging and is a cost effective way of protecting this special species.
