The Coastal & Marine program has supported a range of projects
that have involved on-ground works. Information on some of these
projects are below.
St. Lawrence Wetlands
A project was funded through the Great Barrier Reef Coastal Wetland
Protection Programme to improve ecosystem health of
the St Lawrence wetlands. The project involved activities
to re-connect fish passage from estuaries to
wetland, weed control, provision of interpretive signage
along installed pathways to a viewing platform adjacent to the
wetland (pictured right).
Tannum Boyne Coastcare group clean tonnes of rubbish off Curtis and
Wild Cattle Island
FBA supported the Tannum Boyne Coastcare group to clean large
amounts of rubbish off Curtis and Wild Cattle Islands. Most of the
rubbish around Curtis Island appears to be washing up onto the
beaches. Rubbish collection from Wild Cattle Island was a result of
previous occupency with enough garbage to fill a barge (pictured
right). Removing this rubbish from the islands allows the community
to start afresh to help conserve the aesthetic value of this unique
area.
Neighbourhood Catchment Project
A property holder in the Broadsound area has been proactive and
fenced off
20km of mangrove and coastal land from grazing pressures
(pictured right).
This innovative approach will improve the health of
mangrove habitat
which is valuable to many juvenile fish, crustaceans, birds and
many other species.
