Community based programs are of great importance to the FBA as it
is a community based organisation. As the Coastal and Marine
program is within the FBA it also seeks to positively assist its
subsequent communities. Below are links to some of the community
based projects the Coastal and Marine program is and has been
involved with since its beginning.
Bringing back the 'beach scrub'
The
Bringing Back the Beach Scrub
project assessed the distribution, condition and conservation
significance of Microphyll / Notophyll vine forest on coastal dunes
(i.e.
beach scrub
) between the Fitzroy River and Thuringowa to guide on-ground
management actions at priority sites. This was a cross regional
progect involving the Burdekin Dry Tropics, Mackay Whitsunday and
Fitzroy Basin regions in partnership with the Environmental
Protection Agency, local government and community groups.

Local beach scrub priority sites included Big Dune (Farnborough
Beach), Lammermore Beach and Fishermans Beach (Emu Park).
Activities at these sites included revegetation, weed removal,
fencing, path construction and interperative signage with locally
relevant information.
Tannum Boyne Coastcare group clean tonnes of rubbish off Curtis and
Wild Cattle Islands
FBA supported the Tannum Boyne Coastcare group to clean large
amounts of rubbish off Curtis and Wild Cattle Islands. Most of the
rubbish around Curtis Island appears to be washing up onto the
beaches. Rubbish collection from Wild Cattle Island was a result of
previous occupency with enough garbage to fill a barge (pictured
right). Removing this rubbish from the islands allows the community
to start afresh to help conserve the aesthetic value of this unique
area.
