The Central Queensland region contains a number of important assets
that are crucial for achieving ecologically sustainable
development. These include:
Land
The regions land assets incorporate Productive Agricultural land,
Forestry, Mining Land, Conservation land, Indigenous, Recreation
land and Urban, Industrial and Infrastructure land. Appropriate
management of land resources is necessary to combat pressures and
ensure sustainability.
Ecosystem Health & Biodiversity
The Central Queensland region is home to significant regional
ecosystems and diverse bioregions and landscapes including flood
plains, estuaries, ranges, islands and coastal landscapes. These
are of great value, providing important habitats and significant
species and sites, but face a number of threats that must be
managed appropriately. *Bioregions of Central Queensland
Water
Water resources of Central Queensland include rivers and streams;
groundwater resources; and water storages such as barrages, dams,
and weirs. Water and its use underpin the entire social,
environmental, and economic fabric of Central Queensland. In an
effort to strike a balance between environmental and productive
requirements of the Fitzroy system, both the Fitzroy Water Resource
Plan and the Resource Operations Plan have been produced.
Great Barrier Reef
The Great Barrier Reef extends north-south, off the Central
Queensland coast and is one of the most complex ecosystems in
nature. The Great Barrier Reef is of great value to all Australians
in biodiversity, economic, cultural and aesthetic terms and its
protection is considered to be of global interest.
Cultural Heritage
Central Queensland holds a wealth of cultural heritage, of both
Indigenous and European knowledge in terms of values, beliefs and
places. This is important in defining the unique character of the
region and is worth preserving
Economic
A number of different industries contribute to the economy of
Central Queensland including Primary production, Mining,
Manufacturing, Building and Construction, Transport, Education and
Tourism and the resilience of these industries is the key to
sustaining the vitality of the region.
Social
Central Queensland has people from diverse backgrounds and whose
knowledge, experience and networks contribute to the viability and
vitality of the community.
