Environmental education program goes with the FLOW

Fitzroy Basin Association Inc. (FBA) is taking its environmental education program on the road to Gladstone and Emerald, providing even more opportunities for students in the Fitzroy Basin to learn more about the region’s river systems, land use, animals and unique environments.
FBA Education Officer Peter van Gestel said places are limited and is calling on primary and secondary schools and teachers to register their interest.
“The touring environmental education program caters to students in all grades and has been developed by FBA’s highly successful FLOW Visitors Centre in Rockhampton, which has had over 13,000 visitors since its opening in 2012,” Mr van Gestel said.
“FLOW’s tailored education sessions are tied to the Australian school curriculum and have been extremely well-received by schools across the region, with more than 4,000 students participating in a school session since the centre’s opening.”
Mr van Gestel said the touring FLOW program will allow students in the Fitzroy Basin to learn about their local environment, special species and sustainability when the FLOW tour heads west to Emerald and south to Gladstone schools.
“The Fitzroy Basin is a truly special place,” he said. “Sharing local knowledge is important to our future, and there is no better place to start than with the region’s school students,” Mr van Gestel said.
FBA established FLOW Visitors Centre to raise awareness among students, teachers and the general community about the size of the Fitzroy Basin, its natural assets, and what is being done to protect the future of our region.
“The touring FLOW program offers a free opportunity for students to explore and learn more about their region, and will be visiting Gladstone schools in late July, and schools in the Emerald area in August.”
The FLOW classroom sessions will cater for up to 25 students and be up to 1.5 hours in length, providing the ideal amount of time to engage students in a fun, informative and engaging way.
