Australian Snubfin Dolphin

Australian Snubfin Dolphin

Vulnerable in Queensland under the Nature Conservation Act 1992

With its distinctive, rounded forehead and small ‘snubby’ dorsal fin, this cetacean looks a bit different to other Australian dolphins.

Varying in colour across their body from dark brown to white, snubfins are one of the few dolphins that can move their heads from side to side as well as up and down. FBA funded research has shown the small group of around 80 living at the mouth of the Fitzroy River are genetically isolated from other populations. Find out more about what they eat, where they live and why they’re special here.
